British Stamps — The Big Picture
Penny Black Era (1840-1879)
The world's first postage stamp. Black penny: 1840 only — the plate number matters (1-11). Red pennies followed. Used copies far outnumber mint. Line-engraved printing gives incredible detail. Check for four clear margins and no pen cancellation.
Surface-Printed Issues (1855-1900)
Embossed and surface-printed Victorians. Condition is brutal — used copies common, mint are scarce. The 1867 £5 orange (SG 137) is the holy grail. Watermarks crucial — check every one. Imperforate varieties command huge premiums.
Edwardian & George V (1902-1936)
The 1934 re-engraved definitives. Seahorses (SG 399-401) in high values. George V 1d scarlets — know your shades. The Penny Red plates. Coil stamps with single watermarks.
Modern Definitives (1952-present)
Wilding and Machin definitives. Machin varieties number in the thousands. Phosphor bands — 1, 2, or centre band. Source and date codes. High values from £1 upwards. Cylinder numbers on sheet margins.
World Philately — Key Areas
United States
1847 5c and 10c — the first US stamps. Inverted Jennies. Zeppelin stamps. 1918 24c airmail invert is the most famous US error. Coil stamps and booklet panes. Confederate States — a separate world.
Germany & States
Pre-unification German states are spectacular — Bavaria, Prussia, Thurn & Taxis. Weimar inflation stamps. Third Reich — politically complex, valuable in certain varieties. DDR — underrated.
British Commonwealth
The backbone of most British collections. Canada, Australia, India, South Africa. Commonwealth omnibus issues. High values with impressive designs. Fiscal cancels on high values reduce value significantly.
Classic Rarities
British Guiana 1c magenta (one known). Hawaiian Missionaries. Cape of Good Hope triangulars. Mauritius Post Office stamps. Treskilling Yellow (Sweden). These are the stuff of auction house dreams.
Condition — The Only Thing That Matters
Perfect centring, full original gum, no faults. Dealers add 200-500% premium. Most "mint" stamps don't qualify.
Well centred, good margins, fresh colour. This is what catalogue prices assume. Anything below discounts heavily.
Slightly off-centre, all margins clear. Most stamps in collections fall here.
Noticeable off-centring, margins touching but clear of design. Hinge remnants on mint.
Perfs into design, thins, tears, stains. Only acceptable as a space-filler until better found.
The Cardinal Sins
- 🚫 Hinge on a mint never-hinged stamp — ruins the premium
- 🚫 Regummed stamps — fraud if sold as OG
- 🚫 Cleaned cancels — tampering, reduces value to nothing
- 🚫 Thins (back damage) — stamp is permanently compromised
- 🚫 Trimmed perfs — misrepresented stamps, avoid
